The Siege of Tsingtao
Japan's main contribution to the Allied cause was the siege of Tsingtao. Tsingtao now called Qingdao, was a German port and naval base as well as Germany's strongest colony in the Far east. After Great Britain declared war on Germany, Japan gave them an ultimatum ordering them to withdraw their warships from Japanese and Chinese waters and surrender the entire territory of Kaiochow. The Germans ignored the ultimatum and on August 23 declared war. They didn't actually begin the battle until late October. The Japanese had been landing troops since September 2, while the British gathered there own troops. The siege lasted ten days with the Germans being swamped by over 25,000 Japanese and British Troops. the Germans surrendered November 7, 1914.
